If you have read my story, you know that my goal when taking this job was to work full-time. In my mind, this means working at least 30 hours a week. I am happy to report that I am averaging about 28 hours a week with VIPKID. Some weeks a little more, some weeks a little less. Keep in mind I am only certified to teach LEVEL 1 and I STILL have an average of 50 bookings a week! I have already taught 1,000 class in 174 days. I am very pleased with these numbers for being relatively new to the company and have just added Level 2 in hopes of consistently averaging about 30 hours or more a week. I have several regulars on my schedule which makes planning and prepping for lessons extremely easy! I have developed a relationship with the students, and the majority of these students will follow me to Level 2 as they advance. I have found that one of the most difficult things about working for VIPKID is finding a schedule that works for my needs. In order to achieve close to 30 hours, I need to begin work at 5 a.m. and supplement with a few hours in the evening. The job can be intense when your teaching the lower levels! It includes lots of singing, props, visuals, and TPR (total physical response) in order to get the student to participate and learn. Personally for me, taking naps during the day does NOT replenish a lack of 7 hours of sleep a night, which seems to be what I need to function well during my classes and throughout the day. I am still working on adjusting my schedule to best suit my needs and lifestyle! It definitely takes some time to learn what schedule will help you be the very best teacher (and person) possible!

Many potential VIPKID teachers ask me about taking vacations and if they will lose students if they take time off. The answer is – absolutely not! I recently got married and took 11 days off for my honeymoon. When I returned, I came back to more bookings than ever! I’ve learned that if you create a positive relationship with the students and parents, they will never forget about you I even had many students that did not take other classes until I returned! One of the best things I have found about a job with VIPKID is the flexibility. If I know there are certain days I am unable to work in the coming weeks, I simply do not open those slots. The fact that I can still attend social events and have lots of family time means a lot to me!

Most of my students are well-behaved and eager to learn. They are the reason I love this job- the relationship you will develop with your students is such a special one. One thing I have learned about this job is you need to be “okay” with parents sitting in on your sessions. It is almost like you are getting “observed” daily. This is more common at the younger levels with VIPKID. The parents are there to support their child, keep them focused, but also to learn from you! It’s taken me a bit of time to get used to this, but as my confidence as an online teacher grows I feel less concerned about it. Another adjustment to working with VIPKID is completely student feedback in a timely manner. You have 12 hours to communicate with the parent how their child did during the session. You are to highlight strengths and give suggestions to support areas of weakness. My goal is to complete feedback for students within about 5 minutes, but I always seem to spend about 8 or so! This is something I am continuously working on as an online VIPKID teacher.
I have no plans of leaving my job as a VIPKID teacher. I absolutely love it and there is nothing better than working from home! No planning, no meetings, no traffic to deal with… you get the idea. I just certified for Level 2, which means I will have the opportunity to work with students who are a bit more advanced in their English skills. Stay tuned for more updates as I continue to explore life as a full-time VIPKID teacher!
